Map

map Today we took a drive along the Unaweep Tabeguache Byway west of Montrose.  It winds its way along the Dolores and San Miguel Rivers.  Over the years, the rivers have cut their way through the soft sandstone, leaving flat topped canyons with vertical walls.  The views were spectacular.

One interesting point along the way was the remains of Hanging Flume, an aqueduct system completed during the 19th century to carry water for mining.  If you want to learn more about it, click the image to the right.

The drive took a bit longer than we'd anticipated.  I wanted to get back to the RV park before dark so we found ourselves limiting stops near the end.  I didn't quite make it but close.  Here are some more pictures from the drive.
