This morning I called around and found Parry's Automotive to evaluate the truck. They checked it out and gave me the bad news. The noise is deep in the bottom of the engine and is either a rod, a connection bearing, or if I have 2 piece pistons, a bad piston. In any event, We need a complete engine rebuild.
The worst part is I just replaced the engine 2 years and 15K miles ago. I bought it from DFC Diesel Rebuilders in Canada which offered a 5 year, 100K mile warranty. Prior to purchasing, I searched the web and could not find any negative reviews. But now the phone goes unanswered and in looking at Google reviews, things have changed. There are many complaints of failed engines and the company ultimately not honoring their warranties. Apparently the company was sold and service has gone downhill.
Ok, fine. I'll just buy a new engine and have that fight with DFC later. I agree to the $15K price for a new motor but it won't arrive until September 28th, and then will take 3-4 days to install.
So now we are stuck in Winnemucca for the next month with questionable transportation and just hoping to get back home. The truck still runs but could go at any minute. Thus, we're using it as little as possible.
This has officially become the worst trip ever, topping my 2006 trip which included 3 flat tires, two road closures, a broken boat trailer axle, a sunken boat, 2 trips to the hospital and a speeding ticket when I accelerated leaving town but before the limit changed to 55 mph.
I hope four things is it... For the next month, this is home.
